Gin-Clear, Glacier-Fed Waters
The South Island of New Zealand is home to some of the purest glacier-fed streams and lakes of gin-clear water. These waters call to anglers from around the globe in search of true trophy fish. The average size of our trout is 3–5 pounds, with big trophies regularly going in excess of 10 pounds.
The central South Island fishing season opens on 1 October through to 30 April, with some other lakes and streams opening on the first Saturday of November, and 250 waters remaining open all year. The Mackenzie district holds a gem for anglers in the know — the hydro canals, home to very big trout and salmon, some of which weigh over forty pounds, with good numbers of large rainbow trout between 15 and 30 pounds. Fishing licences are available as 24-hour or full-season, purchased online, through your guide, or at a local hunting and fishing store.
