The Perfect Top-Off to Your Big Game Hunt
Introduced by the early settlers in the 1800s, alpine goats are now widespread throughout the country. Weighing between 80 and 120 lb, they inhabit rocks and hills similar to tahr, although at lower elevations. Their population numbers can become high, as they prefer heavier cover where they can go unseen unless disturbed.
They make the perfect “top-off” to your New Zealand big game hunt, and are also ideal as a first trophy for novices and an affordable big game trophy for youth hunters.
Hunting Alpine Goats
In New Zealand both sexes have horns; in males they are larger and sweep up and backwards, or up and outwards, in an open spiral. We have a few very large properties with high numbers of goats and some outstanding trophy billies. With a variety of cape colours, shot distances are between 20 and 200 yards. To hunt them, we drive up into the hills to spot and stalk, judging trophies off horn size and age.
