Water Buffalo Hunting in Australia is one of the most underrated, wild hunts left in the world today. Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) were first introduced as a food source between 1924-1949 to the Northern Territories of Australia from Timor in Indonesia. Since their introduction the buffalo have now developed a different appearance from their descendants.
Hunters will notice the difference in size of their horns which are now considerably longer, wider, and heavier in mass and can be 8-10 feet tip to tip, they are now being called `swamp Buffalo`. In comparison to the Cape Buffalo the Australian Buffalo can be considerably larger both in body size and height. Many people believe that the cape Buffalo is far more aggressive than that of the swamp Buffalo which in fact is not true.
Most Buffalo and animals in general will choose to flee rather than fight if given the option. The main reasons an animal will charge people are:
- They’ve been wounded by either a hunter or in a fight with another animal.
- Surprising an animal causing freight
- Females in season
- A Cow protecting her calf
- Contesting for herd dominance
- Older lone animals
In 2017, a Buffalo guide was severely injured with multiple broken bones and punctures, thanks to the clients quick response he saved his guides life. The hunter and guide were doing nothing wrong, this incident occurred by just walking past an unseen old Water Buffalo Bull sleep in long grass. These huge animals have explosive speed and are not to be underestimated and their curiosity mistaken. When Water Buffalo Hunting in Australia we choose a completely wild and a free ranging natural environment. Free of farming practices and fences these Buffalo will move according to seasons and water sources, the older Bulls we hunt are 18+ years old, many never have seeing a human or vehicle before which makes them both curious and fearless. During an Australia Buffalo Hunt you can also encounter wild pigs and wild oxen cattle in these areas as well as wild Banteng on the peninsula.
